DIY Seaweed Face Mask for Softer Skin

Seaweed is one of the most nutritious superfoods around, and for good reason. It’s rich in vitamins A and C, but perhaps the most important nutritional benefit is its iodine content, which is essential to maintaining a healthy thyroid and boosting metabolism.

Seaweed isn’t only beneficial to the internal organs; it’s great for restoring moisture levels, revitalizing, and firming the skin, too. It has also been known to reduce the appearance of cellulite. When it comes to your skin, it seems there is nothing seaweed can’t do!

So how can you start treating your skin with seaweed at home? Instead of spending a small fortune on seaweed masks, soaps, moisturizers, or conditioners, try whipping up a seaweed mask at home. 

I found this great recipe for a DIY seaweed face mask on livestrong.com. It makes my skin softer and evens out my skin tone. It will definitely be a part of my regular beauty routine, and I’m sure you’ll love it too.

Seaweed Facemask

What you’ll need:

  • 3 or 4 sheets of dried seaweed
  • Coffee grinder
  • Small bowl
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons lukewarm water
  • Fork
  • 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional)

Step 1

Break up dried seaweed with your hands until it is small enough to fit into a coffee grinder.

Step 2

Grind the seaweed into powder; you need about 1 tablespoon of seaweed powder in all.

Step 3

Dump the seaweed powder into a small bowl and add 1 tablespoon lukewarm water. Mix with a fork, adding up to another tablespoon of lukewarm water as needed to achieve a thick, paste-like consistency. 

Step 4

Add 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel, 1 teaspoon honey -- or both -- to the paste. Stir until well-mixed. Add more water if needed to achieve the desired texture. You can also skip these ingredients entirely, although the aloe helps heal skin irritation and the honey adds to the moisturizing effect of the mask and acts as a preservative.

Step 5

Apply the seaweed mask to your face, leave in place for up to 20 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water. Pat your skin dry. Use this mask up to twice a week as part of your regular beauty routine.
