Ever feel that afternoon energy dip? You’re not alone. Each human body follows a circadian rhythm, an internal natural clock that regulates body temperature, sleep, and various hormonal changes every day.

Studies show that in most people, a small temperature drop occurs between 2pm and 4pm, which may be why many people feel sleepy in the afternoon.

You could turn to caffeine and sugar to beat the afternoon slump, but besides the potential adverse effects to your health, they'll only set you up for a crash later. The great news is that there’s a ton of all-natural, energy-boosting foods out there that are good for you AND will help you perk up!

Here are 5 whole foods that will help boost your energy:

1. Kiwi: Packed with vitamin C and potassium, this tropical fruit will give you the burst of energy you need when you’re tired. An added benefit is that its fiber will help keep you full, too.

2. Eggs: Protein releases energy at a slower rate, preventing the changes in blood sugar that cause us to feel worn out. Eggs are also rich in B-vitamins and iron to give you lasting energy throughout the day.

3. Raw almonds: The healthy fats, fiber, and protein in raw almonds will help balance your blood sugar and keep you energized. So keep a handful readily available whenever you need a natural jolt.

4. Apples: High in antioxidants and natural sugars, an apple will give you a boost of energy and stabilize your blood sugar. Apples don’t need to be refrigerated, making them a great on-the-go snack when you’re feeling fatigued.

5. Dark leafy greens: Kale, spinach, and chard are excellent energy boosters because they’re loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Just toss a few cups of your favorite dark leafy green into a salad for a mid-day pick me up.

A couple of other helpful ways to stay energized is making sure you get enough sleep and drink plenty of water. Dehydration is the most common cause of exhaustion, so it’s really important to stay hydrated – especially during the upcoming hot summer months!
