5 Tips to Stay Healthy While Traveling
Most of us tend to stray from our normal healthy routine when on a trip, and personally, I’m okay with that.
But when I’m en route to my destination, that’s a different story. On travel days, whenever possible, I try to avoid eating foods that make me feel lethargic, bloated, and overall pretty lackluster—especially right before a flight.
This is harder than it sounds. It can be difficult to fight the temptation to stop at fast food restaurant in the airport, load up on unhealthy treats to snack on mid-flight, or over-caffeinate to prepare for your action-packed trip. But all it takes is a little planning to avoid these common pitfalls so that you step off the plane feeling refreshed, healthy, and ready to start your adventure.
Here are 5 healthy travel tips that will make a big difference in how you feel and look the next time you travel:
1. Snack Smarter
Having healthy snacks on hand makes it easy to avoid stocking up on processed foods. If you want to look and feel great after a long trip, then bring anti-inflammatory snacks to munch on like walnuts and almonds. Nuts are a great option because they’re loaded with healthy fats to keep you feeling full longer, plus the omega-3’s will make your complexion glow. Try creating your own trail mix to snack on whenever hunger strikes.
2. Stay Hydrated
Sipping on a latte while flipping though a magazine in the airport just makes sense (at least it did to me!) however; it may not be the best choice. Staying hydrated is extremely important when traveling—and that doesn’t mean guzzling water on the plane either! The best way to combat the dry air on the plane, and feel refreshed when you land, is to make sure you’re hydrated prior to your travels.
Try starting your day with a green smoothie, and then sip on coconut water throughout the day. You’ll be surprised by how much of a difference swapping out a cup of coffee for some H2O makes in your overall health and energy.
3. Take Your Vitamins
If vitamins and supplements are part of your daily routine, then don’t forget to pack them with you to take on your trip. Traveling can add stress on your body, which in turn can wreak havoc on your immune system.
Whenever I travel, I make sure to take my daily supplements, plus some vitamin C to give my immune system a boost. I also find that taking chlorella tablets while traveling helps give my body the phytonutrients it may be lacking, since I tend to eat fewer greens than usual during my travels.
4. Skip the Fast Food
My favorite part of traveling is trying new foods and restaurants, but fast food restaurants never make it on my list. Even though you’re on vacation, you still want to fuel your body with high quality foods. The best way to do this is to avoid fast food chains. If greasy fries give you a stomachache at home, then don’t think it won’t have the same effect on vacation. Instead, explore local cuisines and try to add some greens to your meals at every opportunity!
5. Don’t forget to eat breakfast
It’s easy to skip breakfast when we’re traveling, especially if you’re taking an extremely early flight. However, it’s still important to start your day off right. Eating a fiber-filled breakfast with protein will help keep you energized and keep your digestive system on track. Grab oatmeal with fruit and nuts, a piece of toast with nut butter, or even a snack bar with a high fiber content to keep your energy levels up and sustain you until lunch.
