Healthy Living Guide: Minneapolis/St. Paul
Minneapolis-St. Paul is somewhat of a creative mecca in the Midwest. People interested in everything from crafting to cooking to painting brave the bone-chilling cold to call Minnesota’s capital home. As we saw in Austin and New York City, with a creative environment always comes a booming food scene, and the Twin Cities are no exception! The Minneapolis-St. Paul area was the winner of the James Beard regional award 3 years ago, and countless chefs have flocked from all parts of the world to open up shop in the area. We can’t get enough of the sustainable, healthy food options that this city has to offer. Here are a few of our favorites that we recommend for anyone living or visiting the Twin Cities.

This café, located in Minneapolis’ popular shopping and dining center, The Galleria, is perfect for coffee or lunch with friends. The menu features antibiotic, hormone and nitrate-free, humanely raise meat and poultry as well as sustainable seafood and seasonal, fresh, organic vegetables.
3311 East 25th Street
This family-owned café has been a neighborhood favorite since the 1940s when it first opened its doors as a dairy market. Birchwood later evolved into a grocery market, and finally into Birchwood Café. Now the café boasts a menu of local, sustainable, organic and fair trade dishes with many vegan and vegetarian options, as well.
2409 Lyndale Avenue South
This 100% raw, vegan restaurant is a one-stop shop for health. Drop in to try out their infrared sauna and oxygen bar, purchase some natural body care products from the home and body goods shop, and top off your day with a purple kale salad or an apple pie smoothie.
Mill Valley Kitchen
3906 Excelsior Boulevard
This restaurant has an outstanding menu of Northern Californian cuisine made with local and sustainably sourced ingredients. The menu features the nutritional information for each dish, including the calorie count and the fat, carbohydrate, and protein content. It’s hard to pick a favorite dish at Mill Valley, but we love the Roasted Grape Salad and the Miso Glazed Sea Bass!
1432 West 31st Street
This restaurant features a menu that changes weekly because the chefs work closely with local farms to provide the freshest and best produce and meat of each season. The warm and inviting atmosphere makes Lucia’s the perfect spot for a date night or dinner with friends.
2558 Lyndale Avenue South
Common Roots Café is located in Uptown Minneapolis and is a very popular hangout for local Minnesotans. Stop in for a cup of coffee to-go or sit down to enjoy a meal made of high quality, local, organic and fair-trade ingredients.
2917 Lyndale Avenue South
Galactic Pizza has a vision for the future of our planet: a world that is full of cooperation, sustainability, and harmony. They see it as their responsibility to making a positive change though food. That’s why their ingredients are high-quality, natural, and sustainable, they use 100% electric cars to deliver their pizzas, and the electricity used in their restaurant is renewable wind energy. They also have gluten-free options available on their menu!
2610 Lyndale Avenue South
French Meadow is one of the leaders of the organic food revolution. Since 1985, they have been promoting sustainable agriculture, making and serving slow food, and providing a healthy food oasis for Twin City residents. If you find yourself stuck at the Minnesota airport this winter, stop in one of French Meadow’s several airport locations for a healthy meal.
289 East Fifth Street
The Heartland, located in downtown St. Paul’s Lowertown neighborhood, is truly the epitome of fine dining with a healthy spin. The menu features North American Midwest regional cuisine made with locally sourced, organically grown and sustainably produced ingredients. Everything from the plate presentation to the restaurant décor is beautifully done, making Heartland the perfect choice for a celebratory healthy meal.
Black Dog Café
308 Prince Street
This café and wine bar in downtown St. Paul is a great place to stop in for a coffee and baked treat in the morning or grab your friends and drop by for a glass of wine and live music in the evening! Their menu features homemade soups, salsa, sandwiches, and salads using organic and locally grown produce.
People’s Organic Coffee and Wine Bar is another popular spot in the Galleria. They are a farm-to-table restaurant with a delicious menu of salads, sandwiches, wraps, and burgers. And the best part? You can order an egg breakfast all day!
125 SE Main Street
Aster is a very popular café in downtown Minneapolis. The menu features locally sourced and organic dishes that change based on seasonal availability. The café has a beautiful outdoor space for dining and an indoor stage with live music in the evenings.

The Produce Exchange
920 East Lake Street
Located in the Midtown Global Market, the Produce Exchange is a year-round, indoor farmers market!
This co-op has two convenient locations in St. Paul, both with a wide variety of produce and health foods. Check the Mississippi Market website for membership information.
2105 Lyndale Avenue South
Another popular natural foods co-op, the Wedge works with several local farms to provide the freshest, organic produce for its members. Check The Wedge’s website for membership information.
2200 Hennepin Avenue
Tao is a natural food store that stocks all of your favorite health food brands and organic produce. Do your grocery shopping here or stop in for a healthy lunch at their café. You can even pamper yourself with a massage and facial at their spa.
2823 East Franklin Avenue
Seward is a very popular co-op with tons of local and organic produce, meats, poultry, fish, and health food products. Check their website for membership information.
