Wellness Today's 2014 Superfood Showdown: The Champion!
Ladies and gentlemen, it appears we have a winner. After four weeks, 31 matches, and hundreds of your votes, we’ve found the Ultimate Superfood of 2014, according to Wellness Today readers and our Facebook fans. From sardines to spirulina, quinoa to kale, avocado to amaranth, superfood championship wannabes were cast to the side, and, yesterday the victor emerged, winning the final match against walnuts with a score of 34 to 19. Without further ado, meet your Ultimate Superfood of 2014: Cinnamon!
Though everyone has their different opinions on who deserved to win, and there were certainly some unexpected upsets along the way, nobody can deny that cinnamon is a worthy recipient of the title. We’ve written before about the health benefits of cinnamon, so we won’t go in-depth here, but here’s a quick recap of everything this super-spice can do for you:
- Helps control blood sugar
- Lowers levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
- Has antioxidant properties
- Contains fiber, manganese, iron, and calcium
- Helps with digestive issues, including stomach bugs and IBS
- Reduces pain linked to arthritis
- Treats acne naturally
- Can stop candida yeast infections that are resistant to medicine
- May prevent the spread and growth of cancer cells
- Helps balance female hormones
- Can boost alertness, mood, and memory
All that, plus it’s one of the most delicious superfoods out there! If you’re not willing to sacrifice taste for health (and why should you?), cinnamon is a perfect choice. It’s as good in savory dishes like lamb tagine with prunes and cinnamon as it is in sweet dishes like this apple-cinnamon crumble, and you can have it at breakfast (try this cinnamon-sweet potato loaf), lunch, and dinner, or as a yummy snack, whether you make these cinnamon-glazed walnuts or just sprinkle it over a sliced up apple. In fact, I’m swirling a cinnamon stick in my tea as I write this post!
Thanks so much to everyone who participated in our Superfood Showdown! We had so much fun running the contest, and can’t wait to do it again next year, when cinnamon will have to defend its title!
