Misery loves company and so do people who exercise.
Fortunately, when people participate in a physical activity with others they seem to be happier than being alone, according to a study by researcher Genevieve Dunton at the University of Southern California's Department of Preventive Medicine.
Dunton’s team tracked more than 100 people of varying ages over four days by using mobile phones. During that time span, 84 people said they were involved in at least one physical activity and reported being happy.
What’s more, their level of contentedness was boosted when they were joined by a companion or a group of people, and being in an area outdoors that was “green” added to their level of feeling good.
While researchers couldn’t be sure if there was a cause-and-effect relationship between exercise and having people with you in green surroundings, Dunton believes the study could nonetheless compel those who are active to invite friends along.
